“My biggest joy in life as a young person was going to dance class,” reminisces Angie Whitehurst of Washington, DC. “Back in the 50s and 60s when I was taking class, there were very few studios where black people could go. My first class was taught by Goldie Hawn’s aunt at the Takoma Park Recreation Center.” While Angie has housing today, it’s been on and off for three decades. “If I were describing my housing situation in dance terms, I’d say it has been a grand jeté. There was a period when it was completely up in the air, but I managed to land on my feet.”
